Khewra Salt Mine
Historical Background
The history of the Khewra Salt Mine dates back to ancient times. It is believed that the mine was discovered around 320 BC by the troops of Alexander the Great during their campaign in the region. Legend has it that the soldiers noticed their horses licking the salt from the ground, indicating the presence of a rich salt deposit. However, it wasn’t until the early 16th century, during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, that the mine was officially exploited for commercial purposes. Akbar’s administration recognized the value of the salt, leading to organized mining operations that laid the foundation for what would become one of the most significant salt mines in the world.
The mining operations were primarily conducted by hand until the introduction of modern machinery in the late 19th century, during British colonial rule. This advancement not only improved efficiency but also increased production, allowing for wider distribution and greater economic benefits to the region.
